Ancestral Research Using DNA
DNA testing has become very popular as a way to assist with ancestral research. We can connect with cousins who match our DNA and collaborate on research. There are many different companies offering DNA testing: Ancestry, FTDNA, MyHeritage, 23 & Me, and LivingDNA.
“Painting” our DNA matches with cousins gives us a visual representation of our chromosome segments. This helps us see exactly where along our DNA we match someone. As we continue our research, this allows us to make deductions as to how an unknown cousin may be related. It is a very exciting enhancement to our paper research methods. In most cases, it is not definitive, but it can guide us toward new research possibilities that we had not pursued yet.
If you have taken a DNA test and are confused what to do next, we can help. Contact us for more information.
