Our Work

It is a precious thing to have a handwritten journal from an ancestor. Sometimes, with our present day mindset, it is difficult to read through these old documents and truly understand what life was like for our ancestors. I do supporting research based on the stories told in journals to understand what was happening in their area at the time. I retyped the pages and added notes and pictures.

These secondary sources give us great insight into our ancestors lives, but I like to reference primary sources whenever possible. I am pleased to see that Ella remembered her birthday correctly, 21 Jan 1897. That may sound a little cynical, but incorrect birthdates are used all the time. Her baptism record, in genealogical terms, would be the most reliable source for her correct birthdate, so I included a copy of it in the journal.

Pictures add a whole other dimension to our understanding. I had the pleasure of visiting the area near Uelzen, Germany referenced in the journal and I took these photos to enhance Ella’s memories. Pictures of signs for each of the towns mentioned in the journal are included as well as the church she attended and the home where she was raised. I can visualize her playing in the yard and helping her mother dig potatoes.

We only had a few handwritten pages from Ella, but after adding pictures and references, we now have over twenty pages of information about her family.
